EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE OF TOUCH IN THE CARE SETTING

Please could someone advise me of several acceptable and unacceptable examples of touch in the care setting,  thank you.

Perhaps a couple of example

Perhaps a couple of example to help you thing about this question could be: Acceptable use of touch could include providing physically support to help someone mobilise safely. Unacceptable could include giving someone a hug without their consent.

I do think the answer to this question will depend on the type of workplace and client group so it may be worth asking at work.

Hi crazygal, Much of what

Hi crazygal,

Much of what is and is not acceptable depends on the individual's own personal preferences or cultural/religious beliefs. You need to find out what their preferences are by looking at their care plan and asking them (or key people) about their preferences. What is acceptable to one individual may be inappropriate to another.

There will be times when you need to touch the individual e.g. to undress them or provide personal care - washing, brushing teeth, applying creams, combing hair or helping them to feed etc. but you should always ask for permission first.

You should never grab them or poke them, pinch their cheek or tickle them etc., not even in fun.

Hope that gives you some ideas
